TEREA vs HEETS: what actually changed

August 24, 2026

Reviewed by the Terea Abu Dhabi team · Updated 24 August 2026

Key takeaways

  • TEREA is for IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices. HEETS is for the earlier blade devices.
  • The heating mechanism is the change. An ILUMA induces heat in a metal element sealed inside the TEREA stick; a blade device heats HEETS with a blade that enters the tobacco.
  • Neither stick works in the other system. The manufacturer states TEREA is not compatible in size or technology with blade devices, and that an ILUMA will not start with a HEETS stick inserted.
  • The counting did not change: 20 sticks a pack, 200 sticks a carton of 10 packs, on both ranges.

What is the difference between TEREA and HEETS?

TEREA sticks work only with IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i devices. HEETS work only with blade IQOS devices, which the manufacturer's compatibility page names as IQOS ORIGINALS DUO, IQOS ORIGINALS ONE and IQOS 3 DUO Refreshed.

The difference is structural: the heating element that used to sit in the device now sits inside the stick. That drives everything else on this page.

If you are moving across from HEETS, a plain tobacco or menthol TEREA keeps things familiar: TEREA Silver — Uzbekistan, TEREA Sienna — Indonesia or TEREA Green — Indonesia, for example.

How does the heating work in each one?

IQOS ILUMA devices use what the manufacturer calls the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM: the device induces heat in a metal element placed inside the TEREA stick, and the device itself has no blade. Blade devices heat a HEETS stick with a heating blade built into the holder.

The manufacturer describes that element as coated with stainless steel and placed inside the tobacco part of the stick.

On the blade side, the manufacturer's own IQOS ORIGINALS DUO guide tells you to insert a HEETS stick gently and to clean inside the holder with cleaning sticks without touching the heating blade.

Which devices take TEREA, and which take HEETS?

TEREA goes with the ILUMA and ILUMA i ranges. HEETS goes with the blade generations. There is no model that takes both.

Can I use HEETS in an IQOS ILUMA?

No. The manufacturer's own support FAQ states that an ILUMA device will simply not start with a HEETS stick inserted, because it is built to run only with SMARTCORE sticks.

There is no workaround and no adapter — the device is looking for a metal element a HEETS stick does not contain.

Can I use TEREA in an older blade IQOS device?

No. The manufacturer states plainly that TEREA sticks are not compatible in size or technology with IQOS ORIGINALS DUO, IQOS ORIGINALS ONE or IQOS 3 DUO Refreshed, and warns that using a TEREA stick in a blade device may damage the blade.

The same warning appears on the manufacturer's UAE page for TEREA: do not use ILUMA and TEREA sticks with previous IQOS generations, as this may cause damage to your device.

This direction is the expensive one. A rejected stick costs nothing; a damaged blade costs a device.

What is physically different about a TEREA stick?

A TEREA stick has a fully sealed tobacco section with a metal heating element inside it, and filter tips at both ends. A HEETS stick has an exposed tobacco plug designed for a blade to enter.

The manufacturer states the filter tips at both ends stop loose tobacco falling out and circulating inside the device, and that TEREA leaves no tobacco residue and no need to clean it.

The manufacturer also states that TEREA sticks should not be taken apart, because the metal heating element has sharp edges, and that sticks should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Did TEREA replace HEETS, or are both still sold?

It depends on the market, and this is a point where sources plainly disagree, so here is what we could actually verify on 24 August 2026.

On the manufacturer's own United Arab Emirates site, the devices shown are BONDS by IQOS, IQOS ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA i PRIME, and the stick ranges shown are TEREA for ILUMA and BLENDS for BONDS. HEETS does not appear among them.

On the manufacturer's United Kingdom site on the same date, HEETS packs are still listed alongside TEREA, so HEETS has not vanished everywhere.

Several retailer blogs describe HEETS as being withdrawn market by market. We found no manufacturer statement confirming that globally, so we are not repeating it as fact.

Do TEREA and HEETS come in the same pack and carton sizes?

Yes. Both are sold in packs of 20 sticks, and both are sold in cartons of 10 packs, which is 200 sticks.

The manufacturer's own shop lists single packs as 20 tobacco sticks and its 10-pack unit as 200 tobacco sticks, where it uses the word "bundle" rather than "carton". In the Abu Dhabi market the same unit is almost always called a carton.

Where do BONDS by IQOS and BLENDS sticks fit in?

BONDS by IQOS is a third system. It uses BLENDS sticks, and the manufacturer states that BLENDS are not compatible with IQOS ILUMA or ILUMA i devices, and that SMARTCORE sticks such as TEREA are not compatible with BONDS.

The manufacturer describes BONDS as using a ROUNDHEAT SYSTEM that heats the tobacco through the outer surface of the stick, rather than by induction from within it.

Both BONDS and BLENDS are listed on the manufacturer's UAE site, so three systems now sit side by side and no stick crosses between them.

How do I check which sticks my device takes?

  1. Read the device name on the device, the box or the charger. Anything with ILUMA in the name takes TEREA.
  2. Look into the stick opening. A blade device has a visible heating blade inside the holder; an ILUMA has a flat, bladeless opening.
  3. Check what came in the box. Cleaning sticks and a cleaning tool for a blade indicate a blade device.
  4. Look at the stick you already have. A TEREA stick is sealed at both ends; a HEETS stick shows the tobacco plug that the blade enters.
  5. If it is still unclear, check the manufacturer's support page for your model before ordering a carton.

What does this mean if I am ordering in Abu Dhabi?

Order TEREA only if your device is an IQOS ILUMA or ILUMA i. Everything we deliver in the TEREA range is held here in Abu Dhabi, so it reaches you instantly.

We carry TEREA across six origins: Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Switzerland, Japan and Italy. A carton is 200 sticks — ten packs of 20, priced by origin and flavour.

Orders are taken from 09:00 with a 21:00 cut-off, across 26 areas of Abu Dhabi. Al Ain and Al Dhafra are outside the delivery area, and we refuse those orders rather than promise a time we cannot keep.

Delivery is free on orders of AED 375 or more and AED 30 below that, paid cash or card at the door.

Quick answers: what else do people ask?

Are TEREA and HEETS the same thing?

No. They are two different stick ranges built for two different heating systems. TEREA is for IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i; HEETS is for blade devices.

Will a TEREA stick work in an IQOS 3 DUO?

No. The manufacturer lists TEREA as not compatible in size or technology with IQOS 3 DUO Refreshed, IQOS ORIGINALS DUO and IQOS ORIGINALS ONE. It also warns that trying may damage the blade.

What happens if I put a HEETS stick in an ILUMA?

The manufacturer's support FAQ states the device will simply not start. ILUMA devices are built to run only with SMARTCORE sticks such as TEREA.

Do TEREA sticks work in every ILUMA model?

Yes. The manufacturer states TEREA sticks are designed for the IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i ranges, and that TEREA works with any type of IQOS ILUMA. That covers the ILUMA and ILUMA i devices sold in this market.

How many sticks are in a TEREA pack?

Twenty. The manufacturer lists single TEREA packs as 20 tobacco sticks, and the same count applies to HEETS packs.

How many sticks are in a TEREA carton?

Two hundred. A carton is ten packs of 20, which the manufacturer's own shop lists as a bundle of 10 packs and 200 tobacco sticks.

Does an ILUMA need cleaning sticks?

No. The manufacturer states that with TEREA there is no tobacco residue and no need to clean the device, because there is no blade for tobacco to collect on.

Are BLENDS sticks the same as TEREA?

No. BLENDS are made for BONDS by IQOS, and the manufacturer states BLENDS are not compatible with ILUMA or ILUMA i, and that TEREA is not compatible with BONDS.

How many TEREA origins do you deliver in Abu Dhabi?

Six: Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Switzerland, Japan and Italy. Prices vary by origin and by flavour within an origin — the live figure is on the product page.

How fast is delivery, and what does it cost?

Instant delivery to 26 areas of Abu Dhabi, from 09:00 with a 21:00 cut-off. Delivery is free on orders of AED 375 or more and AED 30 below that, paid cash or card at the door.
