Madinat Zayed is still what people say
Al Danah took its present name in February 2014, having been Madinat Zayed until then; the word means the pearl.
Twelve years on, the shops, the taxi drivers and many tenancy contracts still say Madinat Zayed. Send whichever you have — both reach the same pin, and Zone 1 sector codes such as 1-14, 1-34 and 1-54 work as well.
The gold centre block
The gravitational centre of the district is Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and its Gold Centre, on Sultan Bin Zayed the First Street — the road you may know as 4th Street or East Road. It runs to more than 400 shops, upwards of seventy of them gold jewellers, with a LuLu hypermarket and an Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society inside.
It trades later than our cut-off. If you work a counter there, give the shop name and level rather than the mall alone.
Counters, offices and the flats above them
Al Danah is mid-rise commercial and residential stock rather than the tower clusters of the islands, which changes who takes the delivery. A great many runs here end at a shop counter or an office reception rather than a front door.
Name the person who will sign for it and give a mobile that will be answered. Where a building has a watchman rather than a manned desk, the driver waits at the entrance.
Villas in the middle of downtown
Unusually for central Abu Dhabi, Al Danah still holds standalone villas among the blocks, on side streets that satellite maps label inconsistently.
For those the villa number plus the nearest cross street is enough, and a dropped pin removes the last doubt.
Neighbours and the roads between
Al Danah sits between Al Zahiyah to the north-east, Al Nahyan and Al Manhal inland, and Al Hisn to the west, with Al Reem Island a short run east.
Hamdan Street and Zayed the First Street both cross the district, and Hamdan Centre and Liwa Centre are the older arcades people use as pins.
Parking, and why it helps here
Al Danah is easier on a driver than most of the centre: buildings tend to have covered basement or ground-level parking, and there are free surface lots along Zayed the First Street.
The streets around the gold centre still fill in the evening, so meeting at the entrance saves minutes at the end of a run.
Hotels in the district
Millennium Downtown Abu Dhabi, Royal Rose Abu Dhabi, Copthorne Downtown Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Palace Hotel all take deliveries through the lobby. Send the room number and the name the booking is under; whether a driver goes up is the hotel's call, not ours.
